Yesterday, after 4 years of being in Montana, I broke my falling on ice virginity. It was almost as traumatic as losing the other virginity... only less bruises this time (I kid).
I had a series of falling incidents in college where I would just be walking along, my ankle would twist, and next thing I knew, I would find myself on the floor while my friends walked on, not even noticing I was no longer next to them.
A slipping fall is much more traumatic, I think, because your brain has the time to register that you will be falling soon. It seems to happen almost in slow motion. The most damaging part for me, since I am well padded, is that it seems I pulled about every muscle in my body trying to recover my balance instead of just going with the fall.
That is why I think people should ALWAYS be drunk while walking on ice.
Hhahah those really are the five stages of (sober) falling. When you're drunk its just like "la la la oh why am I on the ground?"
ReplyDeleteIce slipping is how I did the splits for the first time in about 23 years.
ReplyDelete(I used to do gymnastics as a kid)
Coincidentally, it was in Great Falls, MT. Something about that state is slipperier than others...
Heh, funny, just today I was walking to the bus stop. With now being the near end of the Seattle Area Snowmageddon, I today (as was inevitable) slipped on ice and fell squarely on my ass in the middle of the street. I quickly scrambled up and made off on my way, but my palms have hurt all goddamned day. :P
ReplyDeletehahahaha, It's always a good idea to be drunk when doing anything that involves rapid downward motion.
ReplyDeleteIt's a dilemma, you get hurt less when drunk but fall over more...I fell down the stairs once when sober and in a split second relaxed my whole body and wow! I didn't hurt myself. A lifeless bag of bones falls without stress or breakage.
ReplyDeletea friend broke her shoulder & messed it up falling on ice last winter, because she tried to catch herself. so hard to fight that instinct when falling, tho!! be careful out there, and i'm glad you didn't break anything! : )
ReplyDeleteMy fiance slipped on the ice years ago and it messed up her back. She ended up with a lot of problems with her spine and had to have back surgery to remove some of her disks (even though she was only 23 at the time). Luckily the surgery was a success, but falling on ice is dangerous...
ReplyDeleteI've slipped on ice on the way to the school bus when I was in Middle school and I got bruises and cuts on my hands and knees, and I wet myself from the shock of falling so hard... I had to walk back home to change my clothes and wash the blood and pee off of me.
That is terrible. I can't even imagine the horror of snow and ice added to the terror that was my middle school days! *hug*
DeleteAt least I didn't have to go to school covered in blood and pee. lol
DeleteYou may have accidentally put your anti-gravity socks on inside out.
ReplyDeleteSince everyone else is telling their falling stories, I will too. About three years ago, I fell down our front stairs on a super-icy day because I thought that my YOGA SHOES would be grippy. They grip on yoga mats, right?!?! I flew through the air like a cartoon character and ended up with a compression fracture in one vertebra. I was stuck in bed for two or three weeks straight with the dog and the honey on the floor on either side. Fortunately, I made a full recovery. And now I keep Morton's in business single-handedly.
ReplyDeleteI'm telling you guys, there is an advantage to being well padded. We are built to take a beating.
DeleteAlso, ouch!
