My Summer from Hell- Part Two: She's Going To Die

While I was waiting this summer to find out if I had cancer, the night after my cat got the cat equivalent of heat stroke, I got a call from my sister letting me know that she was in the ER with our mother who was about to be flown in a helicopter across Montana to a hospital in my city because she was having a cardiac event that was giving her trouble breathing. The next morning at 5:30 am, I got a call from the ICU doctor telling me to get my ass to the hospital to say goodbye because my mom was about to die.

Thankfully, the hospital is about 8 minutes from my house so I threw on clothes and booked it to the ICU where my mom was absolutely dying. Her lungs had filled with fluid and she was drowning, but she had refused intubation so they couldn't do much to help her.

I entered the room with a crowd of people around her, she was fighting them and was almost unrecognizable with a CPAP mask over her face, out of her mind from the lack of oxygen that was making its way into her blood.

They sort of pushed me forward and told me to talk to her. My mother and her mother didn't get along at all and it just so happened that it was my grandmother's yahrtzeit (that's Jewish for deathaversary, which I always thought was "yard side" as that's how it's pronounced). I grabbed my mom's hand and made her look at me, "It's 7-11, you're not allowed to die today! I'm sorry, but if you insist on dying, you're going to have to put it off so you don't share your death day with grandma."

And my mother is so spiteful that she immediately stopped dying. She did have to go have heart surgery immediately afterward to sustain the whole living deal, but as soon as I got there and reminded her to breathe and fight, she cleared her lungs and was able to be transported across Montana yet again to go to another hospital for her surgery.

It was that night when I got home from the hospital, that my computer died.

And then my husband's computer died, having just died and been replaced two months earlier.

And then I had a hysterectomy.

And then I had weird side effects from my hysterectomy like white-hot leg pain, and 96 hours of full body itching, and phantom uterine cramping that felt like it was tearing me in half.

And then my car died. Twice. (It was the alternator, and then the starter, in a week's time).

And then I found out my neutered cat was an attempted rapist when we let in a cute little neighborhood cat who'd been meowing at our door, then immediately put her out because my cat is horrible and gross, but then she stalked us for five whole nights, howling like she was using a bullhorn outside our windows which, of course, made Stevie howl inside at the top of his lungs for 5 whole nights.

And my state elected a reporter-slamming jerk.

And then I was diagnosed with a breast tumor which probably isn't cancer but might still be cancer.

And then my camera died.

And I was turned down for disability because I have a good attitude which, of course, precludes actually being sick.

And the jerks in our government spent the summer trying like hell to take away my health insurance, which would have meant that I wouldn't be able to be treated for all the Schrodinger cancer I had (or didn't have as the case may be), which I was constantly worried about, which of course made my illness all that much worse (and of course, they're still doing it).

So yeah, my summer had a lot of suckage that just kept on pooping down on me, like a way less appetizing fondue fountain at Golden Corral.

But now that I have a computer again, and  the use of a working camera and I feel slightly less like spending every waking moment binge-watching Netflix (almost done with all eight seasons of Dexter) and playing Candy Crush on my tablet to drown my woes, it is my plan to make up for lost time with content galore, which I hope you will come back for and share.

I also have an actual smartphone now (for the time being, seeing how things go for me) so I'm all over social media as "cheeseblarg" and I'm actually posting stuff, so go ahead and follow me!

So what days of the week are you most looking forward to something to laugh at? Let me know so I can get on setting some kind of schedule, please.

Only You Can Start Forest Fires!

I saw a commercial the other night that was THE worst ad concept I have ever seen in my entire life.

Apparently there is a new Planes movie coming out. You know, the spin-off of Cars, the movie that every child 10 and under was batshit crazy about? It is about fire rescue vehicles. Awesome.

Then there is a commercial from Smokey Bear showing all the ways that a forest fire can start, but OMG the Fire and Rescue guys fly in and put out the fire! Whee!

AND THEN....

It says, "You don't want to see these guys coming in to put out fires, so help prevent them!"

I'm afraid that the people at Smokey Bear's place don't realize that children are basically little sociopaths who will do about anything to see their favorite characters. What was that Smokey, don't trail chains along behind cars 'cause it causes sparks? CHECK! Be sure to fully smother fires? Don't worry mom, I put it out just like Smokey said! *stage wink*

I am just awaiting the reports of fires set by children with the hopes that animated planes will puke red fire retardant on them.

Hanukkah 2013: 1st Night - Dino Ball

On the first night of Hanukkah, your Cheeseblarg gives to you:

Hilarious conversation while trying to assemble my Christmas tree
AND
An ornament giveaway!

So, this is what the box from the tree I got suggests it looks like:

This is what it looked like when my husband and I were done assembling it:

Slight disparity there...
Of course, I blame it on me being Jewish.

Mike (Handing me middle section to fluff because I was being neurotic and was nagging at him to take the tag off the section because tags bother me.)
Me: I don't know what I'm doing. I'm Jewish, I don't know what a tree is supposed to look like.
Mike: What? How can you blame that on being Jewish?
Me: I grew up in Miami Beach, dude, there are no pine trees there! If this was a palm tree, I could totally arrange it.
Mike: Just keep doing it.
Me: My fingers hurt. I'm covered in fake pine needles. This tree sucks.

And then, since he doesn't despise nature like his wife does, and he grew up in Vermont where there are pine trees out the wazoo, he fixed it all because, really... I don't know how tree arms are supposed to go (which is probably apparent since 'tree arms' is how my brain refers to branches). I'm pretty sure the above picture was before it was fixed. He did the bottom and the top... the jacked middle part was the part I did.

Once it was all put together, I looked at the assembly instructions and realized that there was totally a diagram to arrange the branches. It was not anything close to what I had done. Clearly.

The tree no longer sucks, by the way. It is completely and totally covered in the best ornaments ever made. And I don't just mean the ones that I made, though the ones I made are pretty awesome, like this ornament, that was inspired by my papercraft tree. I give you DINO BALL!

LITERALLY

This felted ornament ball will be given away to one lucky reader after December 4th (the last night of Hanukkah). To be eligible to win him, you just have to comment on each of the 8 posts I create for Hanukkah within 48 hours of it being posted. On the sixth of December, I will announce the winner of the ornament, picked from the pool of people who have commented on each post. An extra entry can be earned by sharing each post and pasting a link to your tout in your comment each day. You may share on twitter, tumblr, a public facebook post, or pinterest, but posting on more than one does not earn additional entries for the day. A total of 9 entries is possible.

Should no one comment each day, in order to make me cry, I will figure out some other way to give it out, or I will keep it and be extremely bitter.

Also, commenting with a Haiku is totally appropriate (remember- that is syllables of 5-7-5)

Truth in Advertising- Glucosulin

This commercial from Glucosulin, a super duper magic pill to make diabetics lose weight, is providing my husband and me with unending amusement every time it comes on. Beyond the fact that it is almost guaranteed that it doesn't work (which is beyond the point), I have no idea who approved their animation for "weight loss." Seriously... it could not have been anyone with any sense.  At all.

Below, I have edited the commercial to share what it sounds like in my house every time it airs.

(RSS readers, there is a video here, come watch it!)

Smoke-butt get away from that fire!

When my computer broke, I got a lot of twitter spam about getting a free computer (if I just "filled out some survey") when I complained about the death of my hard drive. I got one the other night, when tweeting about my husband getting me dinner, offering advice on how to deal with men.  Once, I mentioned my best friend from college who died tragically and how she had come to my wedding, and was sent spam for wedding favors (I assure you, they got 140 angry characters back).

And so I have (almost) learned that you cannot mention certain things on twitter without expecting messages from obnoxious spambots:
Smoke, at all... kitchen on fire? Got a new gray cat? Like LOST?
Diets... Anti-diet? Gluten-Free diet? Diet Pepsi?
Harry Potter. No, really. Learned that last night.

Of course, there are lots of bots on twitter that redeem the whole random tweets from stranger-bots thing, like Sue Ellen Crandell who responded when I said "I'm right on top of that, Rose." Or how when you mentioned roads, the (now suspended) Doc Brown bot responded "Roads? Where we're going, we don't need roads!" Totally makes spammy tweets like " Watch the new Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows movie for FREE!!! JUST CLICK THIS SKETCHY LINK!!!!" bearable.

Truth in Advertising- Cannibalism Edition

When it comes to advertising food, I would a) prefer that it not be personified, especially when it is a vegetarian selection, and b)  prefer it not be super happy about offering itself for consumption should it be personified.  It's gross, and off-putting, and frankly, fairly morbid.
I'm looking at you shredded mini-wheats...

Truth in Advertising- Whale Wars Edition

I was looking through the channel guide last night and I came across a show called Lobster Wars.  This reminded me of another show I've never watched called Whale Wars.  I am not entirely sure what either of these shows are truly about, but this is kinda how I imagine them:

Upon researching both shows, they seem to be not quite this exciting.
